Shovhog sires Ipswich double

Former Raheen Stud sire Shovhog made the scoreboard twice with the maiden winners Mr Tracey and Shotfire Joker at Ipswich on Friday, 16 July 2010.

Shotfire Joker (3g Shovhog – Intoxicate by Noalcoholic) was appearing for the first time in six months but bookies weren’t taking any chances with him in the Beaumont Earthmoving Maiden Plate (800m).

The Bruce Brown trained gelding started an even-money favourite and, after a slow start, made up quick ground to trail the front-runner Bulldog Star.  He collared the leader in the straight and Stathi Katsidis still had something up his sleeve on the line.

Shotfire Joker was vetted after failing at Doomben in January and he can move forward with a clean bill of health this time in.  The winner was catalogued as a foal for the 2007 Magic Millions National Sale but was withdrawn by owner-breeders Ardie and Corina Cliffe.

He is a younger half-brother to Drunken Joker (Hula Chief) who was a G3 Doomben Classic winner for the Cliffes.  They also raced their dam Intoxicate won three races for Tooowoomba trainer Ron Macrae.

Shotfire Joker’s sire Shovhog died at Raheen Stud in November 2009.  He retired to Widden Stud in 1999 but was transferred out of the Hunter Valley when his fertility dropped to 40% in 2003.

Shovhog’s fertility returned to commercial levels over smaller books in Queensland and his winning strike-rate continues to tick over at 61%.
