Arrowfield Stud champion Redoute’s Choice added another name to his line-up of winning sire sons during Queensland’s Labour Day meeting at Ipswich.

Mearas joined list when his colt Regular survived a stirring duel in the straight and a protest to win the $150,000 QTIS 600 2YO Plate (1100m). He settled just off the speed until straightening then dashed to the front before fending off the heavily-backed Discreet.

Regular (2c Mearas – Sagre by Clang) drifted to $13 despite an unlucky second on debut at the Gold Coast in March. He led them up but hung out during race and was sent back to the trials before getting the go-ahead for Ipswich.

Mearas retired to Raheen Stud in 2008 but died after just one season in Queensland. He had won the LR Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) at Randwick at just his second race start and then doubled up in the G3 Spring Stakes at Newcastle.

Regular is a homebred for Gold Coast trainer Bryan Guy, his wife Kerry and long-time client Jim Forsyth of Amalgamated Milk Services. Guy also prepares Raheen bred three year-old Noisy Ocean. He was a $15,000 buy at the 2010 Magic Millions Summer yearling sale and has already earned $300,000.

Noisy Ocean (Shovhog) was runner-up to Raheen bred filly Punch On in the G3 Vo Rogue Plate at Doomben on New Year’s Eve and she franked the form on the Gold Coast Guineas.

He endured a nightmare trip on a Heavy 8 last time in the G3 Gunsynd Classic at Eagle Farm. Larry Cassidy earned the fee after they appeared seven times in the stewards report. And, apart from traffic problems, Larry said he didn’t handle the prevailing track conditions.

Noisy Ocean’s NZ bred dam Hepburn Rose (Sir Tristram) has a rising 2yo colt from the first-crop of Raheen sire Publishing. The mare is now in foal to Raheen newcomer Captain Sonador.

Raheen Stud dominated Saturday’s Doomben program with a stakes winning double courtesy of Morning Captain and Adebisi. Winning jockey Chris Munce will stay aboard both horses for the upcoming winter carnival.

Raheen started the year with Magic Millions 3YO Guineas winner Punch On and Queensland’s in-form stud completed a Doomben hat-trick with Kiss Me Deadly in the lucky last on Saturday.

Morning Captain (3g Danbird – Joias by Housebuster) continued his unbeaten run since last October with a gutsy victory in the LR National Jockey Day Stakes (1350m). He has built a picket fence with four wins in a row earning over $185,000.

That’s a marvellous return on the $3,000 he cost from Raheen’s draft at the 2010 Gold Coast Magic Millions. “He got into some trouble but he managed to pick himself up and win,” jockey Chris Munce said. “Any lesser horse would have chickened out. He’s all heart.”

Trainer Kelly Doughty will set Morning Captain for the G3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) on May 5. Raheen bred and raised Shovhog filly Beethog to win the 2010 Gold Coast Guineas.

Adebisi will aim even higher after he brought up a Listed double for Raheen and Munce in the Bribie Quality (1110m) at Doomben.

Adebisi (4g Shovhog – Hell For Leather by Sanction) led from barrier to box and refused to buckle in the straight when challenged by class sprinter Spirit Of Boom. Trainer Desleigh Forster will set him for the G1 BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben on May 12.

Munce reckons Adebisi can mix it with the best of them. “He’s a very good sprinter and has matured a lot since the last time I rode him,” Munce said. “We had to work a little to get to the front and then he exploded away.”

Adebisi has won 7 races in 24 starts topped by the G3 George Moore Quality at Doomben in December. He was a $15,000 graduate from Raheen’s consignment at the 2009 Gold Coast Magic Millions and has now earned over $542,000.

The first two home will clash again in the G2 Victory Stakes (1200m) at Doomben in a fortnight.

Raheen completed a Tatts Treble that paid $203 when Kiss Me Deadly won the Carlton Mid Hcp (1350m) on Saturday. The Rex Lipp trained gelding has come a long way since winning a lowly Dalby maiden in September 2010.

Kiss Me Deadly (4g Snippetson – Kililing by Anabaa) cost $40,000 as part of Raheen’s draft at the 2009 Gold Coast Magic Millions and he has already passed the six-figure mark with plenty more to come. His dam is a half-sister to Banner Headline (Danehill) who won three stakes races at 2000m in Sydney.

Raheen studmaster Basil Nolan is doing good business with the stock of Widden Stud’s under-rated sire Snippetson who stands for a $7,700 fee.

Raheen received $120,000 from Steve Brem for the Snippetson – Seduction Line colt at the Gold Coast Magic Millions in January. And Ben Ahrens weighed in with $43,000 for Raheen’s Snippetson – Wedding Belle filly at the Magic Millions QTIS Sale in March.

ADEBISI
Shovhog sprinter was part of a Raheen treble at Doomben on Saturday.
His dam Hell For Leather is in foal to Raheen sire Captain Sonador.

Ofcoursiecan capped off an extraordinary afternoon of racing at Rosehill on Saturday with a G1 triumph in the Coolmore Classic.

Ofcoursiecan (5m Mossman – Yes She Can Cancan by Canny Lad) has gone from strength-to-strength for trainer Ron Quinton and owner-breeder David Bentata. She won the LR Wenona Girl Hcp as a four year-old and has kept progressing with consecutive wins in the G3 Liverpool City Cup and G1 Coolmore Classic this prep.

The Coolmore was a Group 1 first for Vinery sire Mossman. And the bottom half of the Ofcoursiecan’s pedigree has also generated numerous updates this season thanks to her younger half-brother Gimmethegreenlight (More Than Ready).

Gimmethegreenlight is the top three year-old colt in South Africa this season winning the G1 Queen’s Plate before a last-start placing behind champion mare Igugu in the G1 J&B Met. He will start favourite against his own age in the G1 South African Classic at Turffontein this Saturday, March 31.

Quinton and Bentata both know the value of a Group 1 on a catalogue page. ”The Coolmore is a very important win for her- she’s a valuable broodmare now,” Quinton declared as Kathy O’Hara brought the mare back to scale at Rosehill. “She is very honest and just stuck her head down when it counted.”

Ofcoursiecan’s dam Yes She Can Cancan was bred by Raheen Stud’s Basil Nolan and the Queensland nursery has retained several of her close relations. Her first foal La Goulue (Danehill Dancer) earned black-type at Morphettville and Raheen sold her Testa Rossa colt to Gary Portellli for $85,000 at the 2012 Adelaide Magic Millions.

Raheen also owns Yes She Can Cancan’s half-sister Stepping (Dodge) who won four sprints in Brisbane. Her ultra-impressive colt Club Command is being set for an autumn return to racing before heading to the Brisbane winter carnival.

Trainer Peter Moody will ramp up Club Command’s latest campaign with a jump out Caulfield on Tuesday morning. Raheen sold his yearling brother by Commands at the 2012 Gold Coast Magic Millions. Rookie Adelaide trainer Sam Kavanagh outlasted Moody with a winning bid of $160,000.

OFCOURSEICAN
Smiles all round as Kathy O’Hara wins her first Group 1

Warwick Farm trainer Gary Portelli is a Testa Rossa fan and he bought another bargain by the Vinery sire at the Adelaide Magic Millions this week.

Portelli paid $85,000 for the Testa Rossa – La Goulue colt that was presented by Murrulla Stud as agent for Raheen Stud on Tuesday.

Testa Rossa is also the sire of the Portelli trained sprinter-miler Test Edition who won six races and over $188,000 in NSW and Victoria. “The Adelaide colt is a similar type to Test Edition,” Portelli explained. “He’s a beautiful chestnut with a strong shoulder line and a big back-end.”

Portelli bought him on speck but shouldn’t have trouble selling shares while the colt’s pedigree continues to grow legs. His dam La Goulue is a half-sister to South African star Gimmethegreenlight (More Than Ready) and Ofcourseican (Mossman) who won the G3 Liverpool City Cup at Warwick Farm last Saturday.

Portelli knows at first hand how well that family is going. Ofcourseican defeated his NZ bred galloper Somepin Anypin who was resuming after a G3 Hawkesbury Cup victory in November.

Raheen also sold a first-crop yearling by its Testa Rossa sire Publishing at the Adelaide Magic Millions. The colt from Mine Counter (Zeditave) was purchased by Victorian trainer Ron Daniel for $20,000.

Raheen has entered 20 yearlings by Publishing among its draft for the Magic Millions QTIS Sale starting at the Gold Coast this Sunday.

Mossman received a consolation of sorts with the G3 victory of Ofcourseican in the Liverpool City Cup at Warwick Farm on Saturday.

An hour earlier, the Vinery sire had just been nailed at the elite level when Buffering was narrowly defeated by Hay List in the G1 Newmarket Hcp at Flemington.

Ofcourseican (5m Mossman – Yes She Can Cancan by Canny Lad) is raced by owner-breeder David Bentata and has now earned over $388,000 from 7 wins in 25 starts. Her first black-type victory had been in the LR Wenona Girl Stakes twelve months ago.

Ofcourseican is one of three stakes performers for Yes She Can Cancan. The latest is Champion South African based three year-old Gimmethegreenlight. The More Than Ready colt was a G1 winner of the Queens Plate in January and his next G1 assignment is in the G1 SA Classic on March 31.

Yes She Can Cancan’s first foal La Goulue (Danehill Dancer) won four races in Melbourne and was stakes placed in Adelaide. She is owned by Raheen Stud and the Queensland nursery has a yearling colt by Testa Rossa catalogued as Lot 218 at the Adelaide Magic Millions this Tuesday.

Raheen also owns Yes She Can Cancan’s half-sister Stepping (Dodge) who won four sprints in Brisbane. Her ultra-impressive three year-old colt Club Command is being set for the Brisbane winter carnival by Peter Moody.

Raheen sold his yearling brother by Commands for $160,000 at the 2012 Gold Coast Magic Millions.

Ofcourseican is exempt from a ballot for the G1 Doncaster Mile but trainer Ron Quinton is more inclined to set her for the G1 The Galaxy (1100m) at Randwick. “She can reel off some of the best sectionals in Sydney,” Quinton claimed. “She’s a very valuable broodmare and the price-tag has just gone up again after winning a Group 3.”

Mossman (Success Express) was a G1 winner of the Castlemaine Stakes at Eagle Farm before retiring to Vinery. He has sired 18 stakes winners as part of an overall record of 229 individual winners at a 63% strike rate.

There were mixed emotions on either side of the nation after Tiger Pete won the Thunder Air Roofing Hcp in Perth this week.

Tiger Pete (3c Shovhog – Bligh Bounty by Forging Ahead) appears a nice horse in the making for Albany trainer Steve Wolfe after making his debut as recently as February 5. He won a Mt Barker Maiden second-up on February 16 before doubling up at Ascot last Wednesday.

Tiger Pete was a $19,000 buy from Raheen Stud’s draft at the 2010 Gold Coast Magic Millions. “He presented like a nice colt at the sale,” Raheen studmaster Basil Nolan jnr recalled. “Steve looks like he got a bargain.”

Wolfe knew the pedigree at first hand having part-owned and trained Tiger Pete’s older half-brother Big Jaw Macgraw (Dodge). He won 6 races including a sprint at Ascot on Anzac Day 2007.

Tiger Pete continues the superb run of results for Raheen’s current crop of three year-olds. Heading their list of graduates is Magic Millions 3YO Trophy winner Punch On (Tiger Hill). And former Raheen sire Shovhog has weighed in with brilliant Brisbane winners Rocket To Glory, Adebisi and Noisy Ocean.

Together, the quartet cost a total of $66,000 from Raheen at the Magic Millions and they’ve already collected more than $2 million for their connections.

Nolan is currently prepping Raheen’s latest draft of yearlings for the Magic Millions QTIS Sale on March 18 & 19. There are 36 yearlings going under the hammer at the Gold Coast including 21 from the first crop of resident sire Publishing.

Tiger Pete’s dam Bligh Bounty delivered a colt by Publishing last September but tragedy struck when the mare and foal were struck by lightning on October 8.

“That date is seared in our memory,” Nolan explained remembering the night a destructive thunderstorm struck Queensland’s Gladfield Valley. “It was heartbreaking losing them but at least there’s a silver lining over in West Australia.”

Raheen Stud returns to the Gold Coast with 36 yearlings for the Magic Millions QTIS Sale starting on March 18. First season sire Publishing accounts for 21 yearlings in a draft that has been bolstered by several significant up dates at home and abroad.

Raheen graduate Punch On (Tiger Hill) started the New Year with a fast-finishing victory in the $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas at the Gold Coast. She was a $16,000 buy from Raheen’s draft at the 2010 Magic Millions QTIS yearling sale and has now earned over $806,000 for trainer Peter Balzen.

Before that lucrative result, Punch On led home a Raheen quinella in the G3 Vo Rogue Plate in Brisbane. She defeated Noisy Ocean (Shovhog) who was another bargain at the 2010 Magic Millions. He cost $15,000 and has returned $296,000 for trainer Bryan Guy.

Publishing has half-brothers to Punch On (Lot 258 ex School Blue) and Noisy Ocean (Lot 65 ex Gold on Gold) at the QTIS Sale. “They are both strong, athletic colts and are true to type,” Raheen studmaster Basil Nolan jnr said. “Publishing was a high-class sprinter and his pedigree is Magic Millions through and through.”

Publishing’s sire Testa Rossa and his dam Sally Magic were the first two home in the 1999 Magic Millions 2YO Classic. And he was the highest priced Testa Rossa colt of his year when selling for $250,000 at the 2005 Gold Coast Magic Millions.

Raced by Lloyd Williams, Publishing captured the G3 VRC Standish Hcp down the Flemington straight six and he also claimed the G3 MRC Carlyon Cup (1400m) at Caulfield.

Nolan is also delighted with the progress of Publishing’s colt from Dodgalady (Lot 11). His dam is a three-quarter sister to black-type mare Con’s Amy and Melbourne sprinter-miler Davcon. “He’s a lovely colt,” Nolan said. “He has a blaze but it’s not nearly as big as Davcon’s.”

Apart from Publishing, Raheen’s draft includes yearlings sourced from outside stallions the calibre of Show A Heart, Bel Esprit, Jet Spur, Court Command, Canny Lad and Sequalo. Among the highlights are the colts by Show A Heart (Lot 111 ex Mrs Bligh) and Jet Spur (Lot 364 ex Alyssa Jean).

The Show A Heart is a half-brother to Hard To Catch who claimed black-type wins at Eagle Farm, Gold Coast, Doomben and Eagle Farm. The Jet Spur is from a winning half-sister to the international stakes winners War Of The Worlds (HK) and Conquered Dream (South Africa).

Raheen’s South African connection came up trumps when Gimmethegreenlight won the Queen’s Plate in January. A week after that Group 1 triumph in Cape Town, Raheen sold his close relation by Commands for $160,000 at the Gold Coast Magic Millions yearling sale.

Back home, Adebisi (Shovhog) claimed a G3 victory in the George Moore Stakes at Doomben. He cost $15,000 from Raheen at the 2009 Magic Millions Summer yearling sale and has posted $491,000 in prizemoney.

Mackay based flyer Rocket To Glory also banked more than $400,000 after changing hands for just $20,000 at the 2010 Magic Millions QTIS Sale.

“It’s been a dream run,” Nolan said. “We had four lots in the Top 10 among Queensland studs at the Gold Coast Magic Millions and we’re looking forward to bring the first Publishing yearlings down for the QTIS Sale.”

Raheen Stud is coming off a very successful yearling sale on the Gold Coast and the Queensland based nursery will send three of its best colts down to Adelaide for the Magic Millions in March.

Raheen’s yearlings have been catalogued under the Murrulla Stud consignment heading for Adelaide. Murrulla studmaster Tim Nolan is a son of Raheen owners Basil and Dianne Nolan.

Tim’s brother Basil jnr is also busy prepping Raheen’s consignment for the Gold Coast Magic Millions QTIS Sale a week after Adelaide. Publishing’s initial crop dominate the Gold Coast draft.

“Publishing’s yearlings look nice prospects and we picked out a beauty from his first crop for Adelaide,” Basil Nolan jnr declared. “He’s an outstanding colt and there’s black-type right through his pedigree.”

Catalogued as Lot 10, the Publishing – Mine Counter (Zeditave) colt is from the immediate family of Lindsay Park’s G2 SAJC Yallambee Classic placegetter Prosperous Bid and he’s also closely related to Champion G1 performer Racing To Win.

Publishing’s sire Testa Rossa has a second-to-none record in Adelaide siring G1 winners ranging from Rostova in the Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) to Testafiable in the South Australian Derby (2500m).

Publishing was the highest priced Testa Rossa colt of his year when making $250,000 at the 2005 Gold Coast Magic Millions and he paid it back pronto with G3 victories at Flemington and Caulfield.

Raheen’s Testa Rossa – La Goulue (Danehill Dancer) colt listed as Lot 218 in Adelaide also has local links through his dam. La Goulue won twice at Moonee Valley and was third home in the 2009 LR W H Wylie Hcp at Morphettville behind Very Discreet and Augusta Proud.

La Goulue is a half-sister to Gimmethegreenlight who is gunning for Champion 3YO honours in South Africa this season. The Australian bred colt won the G1 Queen’s Plate and then looked all set to double up in the G1 J&B Met before Horse of the Year Igugu arrived with an inexorable finish.

Raheen owns several mares from Gimmethegreenlight’s family and Cape Town trainer Justin Snaith has been keeping the Nolans up to date with the colt’s progress. “No three year-old had won the J&B Met since Badger’s Coast back in 2000,” Snaith said. “And it took a champion to beat him.

“Gimmethegreenlight gave it everything and was courageous in defeat. He pulled up 100% sound and will be back for another Group 1 after a short break.”

Gimmethegreenlight (More Than Ready) has been invited to the 2012 Breeders’ Cup in November but there are delays exporting horses out of South Africa due to African Horse Sickness.

The Jet Spur colt from She Can Chatter (Canny Lad) is other Raheen colt with an international pedigree through his dam’s half-brother Top Spin. Catalogued as Lot 56, he will impress South East Asian buyers who can recall Top Spin winning the G1 Kranji Mile and G1 Singapore Derby.
