Captain caps successful week at Doomben

Captain Sonador capped off a successful week at the Magic Millions QTIS Sale with another promising city winner on Saturday.

His filly Dream Finnish staged a last-to-first finish along the fence to claim the Mater Dei Hcp (1350m) at Doomben.  She defeated the favourite Montana Star (Reward For Effort) by more than a length.

The Michael Nolan trained two year-old was coming off an Ipswich maiden victory but started an $18 outsider at the rain-shortened meeting.  “There’s no way she should have been that price,” Nolan said.  “She had improved lengths since Ipswich and I thought the 1350 metres might test a few of them.

“We wanted to lead to test them out but she missed the kick.  It worked out OK in the end and there’s even more improvement to come – she will get out to mile.”

Dream Finnish (2f Captain Sonador – Kililing by Anabaa) has already paid her way after being knocked down for $16,000 at the 2014 QTIS Yearling Sale.  The Raheen graduate banked over $61,000 in prizemoney and a QTIS bonus on Saturday.

Captain Sonador’s second and penultimate crop highlighted another strong QTIS Sale for Raheen Stud last week.  The Warwick nursery catalogued 31 lots for the Gold Coast and only two of its Captain Sonador yearlings were passed in.

Trainer Desleigh Forster paid top price of $60,000 for the sister to her Captain Sonador colt I’m Belucci who was a most impressive placegetter on debut at Doomben in January.

Captain Sonador leads the Queensland first-season sires’ premiership from Rothesay and he unveiled another early winner when Memphis Girl cruised home in a Gold Coast trial on Thursday.

Hoofnote:  Raheen bred graduate Tiger Pete improved his record to 11 wins for earnings of $348,000 at Ascot on Saturday.  The Shovhog gelding was a $19,000 buy for trainer Steve Wolfe at the 2010 Gold Coast Magic Millions.
